Sculptural 18th century Italian papier-mâché (or cartapesta) Mary and Jesus. The Halo around Mary and Jesus is gold guilt metal. Her dress is made up of a silk chiffon fabric with gold pattern plus a combination of bronze carta pasta with a coordinating gold pattern. This is a very unusual piece, the face and figures of both Mary and Jesus are beautifully artistic created by hand with cartapesta - traditional Italian papier-mâché technique typical in Puglia where this artistic craft originated.
The figurative sculpture creates a historic work of art with ecclesiastical significance.
