Sculptural 18th century Italian hand-carved wood figure of Christ on an optical calcite crystal base. The original red bole shows through on the artifact and coordinates with the phantom red hues of the calcite crystal base. Red bole is a mixed clay base traditionally applied on top of gesso to provide a base for the gold leaf, enhancing the color.
