18th century Italian fragment decorated with natural forming copper, garnets, and gold mica on an optical calcite base.

The Italian fragment originally came from a piece in Tuscany. It is then mounted onto the optical calcite base using the natural-forming copper and garnets, giving the illusion that the sculptural piece defies gravity. It is then is embellished with gold mica on the side of the piece that coordinates with the gold-leaf fragment.

The matrimony of the minerals and fragment creates a piece that appears to have evolved together over time. Each detail looks as though it organically grew from the fragment artifact — perfecting the art of illusion and evoking man-made evolution. Interpreting the past to create a piece entirely original, evolving in its own right.
