Pair of large 17th century Italian hand-carved and gilded angels with mica wings adorned with dynamically applied selenite and citrine crystals and mounted on lucite bases.
These angels are from a church in Tuscany and would have originally been on either side of the church altar. The angels wear a silver leaf robe while their bodies are gilded. Due to age, their wings have been displaced, but have been replicated with coordinating naturally forming mica wings. An organic selenite crystal replaces one arm and in each hand are natural citrine crystals. Missing parts of the toes have also been replaced with faceted citrine crystals. Each figure stands on a lucite base.
The combination of the rare and unusual angelic figures with the natural forming elements, bring together a unique organic antiquity. The elements create a pair that appears to have evolved together over time. Through the preservation of the ecclesiastical artifacts, they still carry historical prominence while being transformed and mounted with the natural specimens to create a sculptural and figurative pair of organic and old.
