18th century Italian gilded putto mounted on hand-carved and polished quartz crystal wings on a gold stand. A putto is a cherub figure frequently appearing in both mythological and religious paintings and sculpture, especially of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
This was once used as part of a decorative motif in angelic depictions in a historic Italian church. The piece is mounted on the aragonite which emulates a cloud. The quartz crystal wings are hand-carved and polished to create the shape of the angel wings.
Together, the elements create a historically significant yet contemporary, sculptural work of art.
