17th century Italian fragment decorated with a fossil hystrivasum shell and small shells on an antique metal shell.
This fragment is from a church in Liguria. It is distressed from age with the original gesso and gold leaf showing through. The coordinating hystrivasum shell and other white fossil shells are mounted on top that resemble the color and texture of the piece. The base is an antique metal stand which compliments the gold leaf of the fragment.
The piece has been combined with the elements to create a historically significant yet contemporary, organic work of old and new.
